Gatt Finishes First in Stage Two of the 2001 International Pedigree® Stage Stop Sled Dog Race
Dubois, Wyoming--January 28, 2001
Hans Gatt, three-time winner of the International Pedigree® Stage Stop Sled Dog Race (IPSSSDR), posted the fastest time in stage two of the race, a 45-mile trek from Moran to
Dubois, with 3:29:32. Jacques Philip, of Nenana, Alaska, was second with 3:34:29, followed by Melanie Shirilla, of Lincoln, Montana, with 3:38:12.
In overall standings, Gatt leads with 3:39:30. Philip is second with 3:44:45; Shirilla is third with 3:49:45.
Against the dramatic backdrop of the Grand Tetons, 22 teams left the starting line in 3- minute intervals. Teams ranged from 9 to 12 dogs. The course--a combination of steep climbs and fast straight-aways--reached an altitude of 10,000 feet, posing challenges to many of the teams.
Following the race, mushers attended a banquet at Headwaters in Dubois. Stage three begins in Dubois on Monday, January 29, and travels 58 miles to Elk Ridge Lodge near Pinedale. The 2001 race began in Jackson Hole on January 27 and travels through Moran Dubois, Pinedale, Lander, Atlantic City, Mountain View, Lyman, Evanston, Kemmerer/Diamondville, Smoot/Afton and Alpine before returning to Jackson Hole on February 7.
During the 11-day race, Pedigree will host a daily web cast on www.mypetstop.com, that will feature video footage of the race. A donation will be made by Pedigree/Homeward Bound, a national pet adoption support program, for each visitor to the site during the race.
The International Pedigree® Stage Stop Sled Dog Race was founded in 1996 by Frank Teasley to make sled dog racing more accessible to the public. Race organizers are working to link the race to the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympic Games as an exhibition.
