Shirilla Wins Stage Five, Maintains Overall Lead
Lander, Wyoming—January 30, 2002—Melanie Shirilla from Lincoln, Montana, won
stage five of the International Pedigree Stage Stop Sled Dog Race with
2:30:55. Ken Anderson from Fairbanks, Alaska, was second with 2:32:47,
followed by Doug Swingley from Lincoln, Montana, in third with 2:38:29.
Scott Smith from Dubois, Wyoming, was fourth with 2:41:01; Jacques Philip
from Nenana, Alaska, was fifth with 2:43:10.
In overall standings, Shirilla maintains the lead with 14:46:17, followed by
Swingley with 15:26:24. Anderson is third with 15:33:14.
Teams left Irish Canyon at 10:00 a.m. with temperatures reported at –20
degrees on the 30-mile run to Blucher Creek. At Blucher Creek, where camp
was built by the Rock Springs Snowmobile Club, teams will camp for the
second campout of the race. Tomorrow, January 31, teams leave on stage six,
a 35-mile run to Bruce’s Landing in Sinks Canyon 9 miles outside Lander. On
January 31, at 6:00 P.M, Lander will host a banquet at the Lander Community
Center.
With its unique stage stop racing format, the IPSSSDR stops in a different
Wyoming community each night. The 2002 race, which began on January 26, will
travel through Lander, Evanston, Mountain View, Lyman, Kemmerer/Diamondville
and Alpine before returning to Jackson Hole on February 6.
During the 12-day race, Pedigree will host a daily web cast on
www.pedigree.com, that will feature video footage of the race. Through
Homeward Bound, a national pet adoption support program, Pedigree will make
a donation to animal shelters for each visitor to the site during the race.
The International Pedigree Stage Stop Sled Dog Race was founded in 1996 by
Frank Teasley to make sled dog racing more accessible to the public. The
event is supported by a number of Wyoming businesses including Union
Cellular, Bank of Jackson Hole and JacksonHoleNet.com. For more information,
