Dubois, Wyoming January 30, 2000 Hans Gatt, two-time champion of the International Rocky Mountain Stage Stop Sled Dog Race  (IPSSSDR) had the fastest time during stage two of the race, a 40 mile course from Grand Teton Koa in Moran to Dubois, with a time of 3:38:09.  Jacques Philip, of Nenana, Alaska, was second with 3:39:54; Dan MacEachen of Snowmass Valley, Colorado, was third with 3:41:28.

Gatt of Atlin, British Columbia averaged 11.6 miles per hour during the 42 mile course which ranged from steep climbs and rolling hills to straightaways.  Gatt’s performance in today’s stage also positions him as first overall with a cumulative time of 3:46:31. Philip is second overall with 3:49:42; and  MacEachen third with 3:50:06

In the last four years, I’ve never seen the course this good, says Gatt.  I just want to thank the people who made this happen.  The people of Wyoming are great.

Against the spectacular backdrop of the Grand Tetons and a temperature of

-23 degrees, 23 teams left the starting line in two-minute intervals.  Four newcomers to the IPSSSDR posted times in stage two’s top ten finishes:  Melanie Shirilla from Lincoln, Montana, was fourth with a  time of 3:43:34; Ken Anderson of Fairbanks, Alaska, was fifth with a time of  3:44:35; Dan Carter of Jackson, Wyoming, was eighth with 3:55:59; and Matt Hayashida of Meeker, Colorado, was tenth with 3:59:39.

Stage Three begins Monday, January 31 in Dubois at 9:00 a.m. with mushers running a 33-mile course from the Dubois Snow Oval to Elk Ridge Lodge near Pinedale.  Tomorrow night mushers will experience their first campout at Green River Camp.

The race, with its unique stage stop racing format, traverses through 14 Wyoming communities from January 29-February 9, stopping in a different town each night. During the next 11 days, teams will continue on to Pinedale, Lander, Atlantic City, Evanston, Mountain View/Lyman, Kemmerer/Diamondville, Smoot/Afton, and Alpine 425 miles before returning to Teton Village in Jackson Hole.
